Winter/Spring FGLI Book Club: "Moving Up Without Losing Your Way" In-Person
Winter Reading Community for First-Generation, Low-Income Students, Faculty, and Staff
Join fellow FGLI students, faculty, and staff this winter in reading Jennifer Morton's "Moving Up Without Losing Your Way: The Ethical Costs of Upward Mobility" – a thought-provoking exploration of the challenges we face navigating elite institutions like Vanderbilt.
Why This Book Matters: Written by a University of Pennsylvania professor who understands elite higher education, Morton addresses questions many of us grapple with: How do we stay authentic while succeeding in new environments? What do we owe our families as we advance? How do we handle identity shifts and cultural tensions?
The Experience
- Winter Break Reading: Read at your own pace (December 2025 - January 2026)
- Spring Discussions: Join 3-4 guided sessions (February-April 2026)
- Community Connection: Engage with FGLI undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty
This book club aims to foster authentic conversations about the challenges of upward mobility. Ideal for students, faculty, and staff seeking deeper community connections or exploring post-graduation planning options.
